Domain Names

If your domain is close to renewal time (or even if it's not), you may be getting all types of notices from different companies asking you to renew your domain with them. That's no problem as long as they are up front and honest about who they are. There are many, however, who aren't so honest about all of this. I've seen domain renewal reminders that have Verisign on part of the page but send you to a link that has nothing to do with VeriSign, so someone else would have your money for the domain renewal.

There are also many companies pushing sales of the new domain extensions. One that is especially hot right now is the .us domain. It's a great domain to have, but make sure you are signing up with the right people to both make sure any extra domain is going to the right place (two or three domains can point to the same site), and to make sure you aren't paying more than one company for your domains. If you get a renewal reminder by phone, fax, or email, please call us first.

Is your domain name registered correctly? The company or person who has the website should be the registrant of the website. Often, however, this is not the case. Sometimes a developer, knowingly or unknowingly, registers the domain in their name. To check this, you can go to www.networksolutions.com/whois/ and do a whois lookup. Then, type in your domain name. It should look like this:

Registrant:
I Know Tek, Inc. (IKNOWTEK-DOM)
1892 Techny Ct
Northbrook, IL 60062-5474
US

Domain Name: IKNOWTEK.COM

The other contacts are technical, administrative, and billing. Your company should be the administrative contact, and your developer (or hosting company) should be the technical contact. Contact us if you have any questions.
